If you have an older house or just a bathroom that has some dated shower tile, tile flooring, and fixtures, it may be time for a bathroom remodel. But how do you decide when the right time is? And can you just regrout or clean your tile to give it a little more life? We share three tips to consider when weighing a bathroom remodel:
1. Care for and clean your tile before a bathroom remodel.
You may not necessarily need to redo your whole bathroom. If your tile is still modern-looking and doesn’t have any cracks, you may be able to clean it.
How to care for your tile floors
Tile is known for being water-resistant and being easy to clean. Maintaining and cleaning it can mean your tile flooring, walls and counters will last for many years (and look great as well).
Before using any tile cleaning products, you’ll want to sweep or vacuum floors to remove any dust or debris. Use a damp mop on your tile floor at least once a week to decrease the wear and tear from grit, dirt, and soil. You may want to do this more often for tile flooring in high traffic areas, like your kitchen.

Preventing damage to your tile floors
Some tips to keep your shower tile and tile floors protected include:
- If you’re installing your own tile, you’ll want to use a sealer on grout joints shortly after installation.
- Make sure to test any scouring powders and sealants on a small area before cleaning the full area of a tile floor or shower tile.
- Check the products you’re using to see if they’re good for cleaning grout.
- After cleaning, rinse the entire area with clear water to remove any residue from the cleaning product.
- Have any damaged or broken tile removed and replaced by a qualified tile contractor, like Restor-It.
2. Deal with any damage immediately.
If you experience water damage in your home and have to deal with water damage repair, you’ll likely need to look at replacing shower tile or tile flooring in the impacted area. There are other issues you’ll need to address with any damage in any area of your house.
